Yesterday I was browsing through the 3d/landscapes-section and noticed (again) some images which used ... well, weird colors for the sky... like green or purple. I'm not so sure, whether those images were intended to look that unnatural or if the people who made them just couldn't get them right...
Anyway... I thought, I'd make a render which uses an "unearthy" color but still looks somewhat natural. This is what I came up with. Kind of a mixture of an alien-like world and an "end of days"-scenario on earth. Hence, the title ;)

Brilliant terrain, I'm guessing it's a procedural one, especially with how detailed those lump rocks are. And the material is interesting too, with those red patches on the flatter areas

And yes, I see many 3D scenes with crazy-coloured skies. I think most are intentional, since many want to see what a "realistic" landscape would look like with a different sky 8-)

Umm... Actually there are three procedural terrains ;)
Two larger ones in the background and a smaller one in the foreground, which kinda pokes through the outskirts of the overlying background terrains and thus creates those lump rocks.

As for the material, that wasn't me. It's one of the built-in materials -- "sandstone" or something with desert... can't remember. But I was very surprised how well it turned out ;)

... I'm not totally against weird-colored skies. I'd just like to see some effort behind it to make those scenes a bit more believable. For example, yellow clouds would result from sulfur in the atmosphere, but then the terrain would be somehow eroded... ;)

Fantastic landscape! Great terrain and materials.

Thanks a lot!

Actually, I thought the rocks would turn out a bit sharper. Now they look more like sandstone. But the eroded look still somehow fits, I guess...
